Gazing at the stars

Everyone wonders about their place in the Universe when looking at the stars. The starry night sky, a ‘gate’ for the voyage into cosmic infinity, never fails to attract the eye, compel the mind to ponder the origins of this world, incite the imagination to envision its evolution in the future.

The need to know what is out there, to grasp the origins of the cosmos and solve its mysteries is innate and deeply existential. It is also timeless and universal – it informs the history of mankind, from prehistoric times to the present, as the driving force of an enduring quest pursued by all civilizations.

For ancient observers of the sky, it was the naked eye that spurred the imagination to identify in the shape of various constellations the form of animals, of mythical heroes and divinities; that guided reason and philosophical speculation in the effort to decipher the movement of planets and celestial bodies inside the cosmic system. And although the human worldview had long placed the Earth at the center of a measurable Universe, Galileo’s telescope, to begin with, and the radical advancement of technology in the centuries that followed revealed a reality that not only seemed unfathomable to the common mind, but also presented a great challenge to science itself: a Universe that is vaster than we had ever imagined, whose observable part alone counts billions of galaxies, planetary systems, stars and black holes, enormous nebulae.

The planetarium is a space that can somehow allay the awe inspired in us by the magnificent size of the Universe. In Athens, the Planetarium dome of the Eugenides Foundation is a firmament-like structure that offers us the extraordinary experience of travelling into worlds made familiar by scientific breakthroughs and worlds as yet unknown, filled with the promise of new discoveries – fields of mystery suggestive of the most unexpected developments, that will continue to fuel utopian dreams so long as they remain outside the reach of knowledge.

Invited by the Eugenides Foundation, Costas Varotsos presents Utopia, an exhibition that attempts a poetic reading of our celestial sphere. His installations, arranged across the foundation’s ground floor, along a short route that begins at the entrance and leads up to the open-air atrium, are inspired both by what we already know about the laws of the Universe and what still remains a mystery. In this utopian journey from sky to earth, natural materials and poles of energy combine in works that attempt to describe cosmic structures and to underline the laws governing the evolution of the universe, their particular logic and validity.

Space and time, matter and energy, order and chaos are some of the concepts that Varotsos’ visual interventions attempt to probe, as fundamental ‘principles’ of the Universe’s unbroken continuity and balance.

‘Genesis’, a work created at the Eugenides Foundation to commemorate 2009 as the International Year of Astronomy, marking the quadricentennial of Galileo’s invention of the telescope, serves as a launch pad for this journey. A galaxy of glass stones and rocks stretches over the space of the entrance, ‘greeting’ the birth of two stars: a wondrous phenomenon, an outpour of energy and force occurring inside nebulae. Following this, a glass door that stands as a gate to the starry sky, lends the surrounding space an added, magical quality. As we move further inside the foundation, we come across an enigmatic glass labyrinth: the image of nebulae that is ‘impressed’ upon its walls makes us wonder about the mystery of its indiscernible center. A series of ‘constellations’ serves to remind us of the distance in time that starlight must cross before it reaches the earth; the ‘diamond ring’ of a total solar eclipse alludes to nature’s transformations and evokes age-old superstitions inspired by this phenomenon; a couple of stone-made ‘meteorites’ still seems to throb with energy. The ‘vortex’ of rocks rising at the atrium presents an image of uncanny buoyancy; the balance of its painstaking geometry secured by taut steel wire.

The sky casts its spell both through the panorama it has revealed to us and through those aspects of it that still remain unexplored. In fact, though science has provided many answers to our questions about the Universe, it is this obscure side of it, its undetected powers, that perhaps continues to hold us under that spell. Space was once a mere utopia, a setting for journeys existing only in fiction; eventually conquered by astronauts to become today the ultimate ‘exotic’ destination for the super rich. And if there is a potential reality implied in all utopias, then there will always be, in that endless sky, the possibility of a voyage into another world, a world promising a different future. For this, the sky will never cease to nurture our dreams and hopes when, in times of trouble, we turn our gaze to it.

Με το βλέμμα στραμμένο στα αστέρια

Κάθε άνθρωπος έχει αναρωτηθεί για τη θέση του μέσα στο Σύμπαν κοιτάζοντας τα αστέρια. Ο έναστρος νυχτερινός ουρανός, μία «πόρτα» για το ταξίδι στο άπειρο του Σύμπαντος, ελκύει πάντα το βλέμμα, προκαλώντας τη σκέψη για την απαρχή του κόσμου και τη φαντασία για τη συνέχειά του.

Η ανάγκη να γνωρίσουμε το Σύμπαν, να αντιληφθούμε την προέλευσή του και να επιλύσουμε τα μυστήριά του, είναι έμφυτη και βαθιά υπαρξιακή. Είναι ακόμα διαχρονική και πανανθρώπινη, καθώς εκτείνεται από τους προϊστορικούς χρόνους μέχρι τη σημερινή εποχή, ως μία διαρκής αναζήτηση για κάθε πολιτισμό.

Για τους αρχαίους παρατηρητές του ουρανού, το γυμνό μάτι ενεργοποίησε τη φαντασία στο να αναγνώσει αστερισμούς μέσα από μορφές ζώων, μυθικών ηρώων και θεοτήτων, και οδήγησε τον ορθολογισμό και τη φιλοσοφική σκέψη στο να εξηγήσουν τις κινήσεις των άστρων και των πλανητών στο συμπαντικό σύστημα. Κι αν η ανθρώπινη κοσμοθεωρία για πολύ καιρό κυρίως έθετε τη Γη στο κέντρο ενός μετρήσιμου Σύμπαντος, η ανακάλυψη του τηλεσκόπιου από τον Γαλιλαίο ως αρχή, και οι ραγδαίες τεχνολογικές εξελίξεις τους επόμενους αιώνες, έφεραν στο φως μια ασύλληπτη για τον κοινό νου, αλλά και επιστημονικά προκλητική πραγματικότητα: ένα Σύμπαν πολύ πιο μεγάλο απ’ ό,τι φανταζόμασταν ποτέ, που μόνο το ορατό του μέρος μετρά δισεκατομμύρια γαλαξίες, πλανητικά συστήματα, αστέρες, μαύρες τρύπες, τεράστια νεφελώματα.

Ένας από τους χώρους που κατορθώνει να «κατευνάσει» το ανθρώπινο δέος μπροστά στο μεγαλειώδες μέγεθος του Σύμπαντος είναι το Πλανητάριο. Στην Αθήνα, ο θόλος του Πλανηταρίου του Ιδρύματος Ευγενίδου είναι το στερέωμα απ’ όπου ξεκινούν μοναδικά ταξίδια προς κόσμους γνώριμους μέσα από τις επιστημονικές κατακτήσεις, κι άλλους νέους, γεμάτους υποσχέσεις για καινούργιες ανακαλύψεις. Πεδία άγνωστα που κρύβουν τις πιο απροσδόκητες εξελίξεις και που, μέχρι να κατακτηθούν με τη δύναμη της γνώσης, επιτρέπουν το σχηματισμό και του πιο ουτοπικού ονείρου.

Επιχειρώντας μια ποιητική ανάγνωση του Σύμπαντος που μας περιβάλλει, ο Κώστας Βαρώτσος, φιλοξενούμενος του Ιδρύματος Ευγενίδου, παρουσιάζει την έκθεση «Ουτοπία». Οι εγκαταστάσεις του, που ξεκινούν από την είσοδο του Ευγενίδειου και ακολουθούν μια μικρή διαδρομή στον ισόγειο χώρο έως το εξωτερικό αίθριο, αντλούν έμπνευση απ’ όσα γνωρίζουμε ότι ορίζουν το Σύμπαν αλλά και όσα αποτελούν ακόμα μυστήριο. Στο ουτοπικό ταξίδι από τον ουρανό στη γη, φυσικά υλικά συνενώνονται με πόλους ενέργειας σε έργα που επιχειρούν να περιγράψουν κοσμικές δομές και να υπογραμμίσουν τη δύναμη και τη λογική των νόμων που διέπουν τη συμπαντική εξέλιξη.

Χώρος, χρόνος, ύλη, ενέργεια, τάξη και αταξία είναι κάποιες από τις έννοιες που διαπραγματεύονται οι εικαστικές παρεμβάσεις του Βαρώτσου, ως θεμελιώδεις «αρχές» στη συνεχή ροή και την ισορροπία του Σύμπαντος.

Ξεκίνημα αυτού του ταξιδιού αποτελεί η «Γένεση», έργο που δημιουργήθηκε στο Ευγενίδειο για τον εορτασμό του 2009 ως Έτους Αστρονομίας, με αφορμή τα 400 χρόνια από τότε που ο Γαλιλαίος εφηύρε το τηλεσκόπιο. Ένας γαλαξίας από γυάλινες και φυσικές πέτρες γεμίζει το χώρο και «υποδέχεται» τη γένεση δύο άστρων, μία θαυμαστή διαδικασία γεμάτη ένταση κι ενέργεια στο εσωτερικό των νεφελωμάτων. Έξω από αυτή την είσοδο, μία γυάλινη πόρτα, σαν πύλη προς τον έναστρο ουρανό, δίνει μια δεύτερη, μαγική διάσταση στο χώρο. Προχωρώντας στο εσωτερικό, ένας αινιγματικός γυάλινος λαβύρινθος, με «αποτυπωμένα» νεφελώματα στα τοιχώματά του, γεννάει το μυστήριο για όσα συμβαίνουν στο δυσδιάκριτο κέντρο του. «Αστερισμοί» υπενθυμίζουν τη γέφυρα του χρόνου που χρειάζεται για να φτάσει στη γη το αστρικό φως, το «διαμαντένιο δαχτυλίδι» μιας ολικής έκλειψης ηλίου παραπέμπει στις φυσικές μεταβολές αλλά και τις πανάρχαιες προλήψεις που απορρέουν από το φαινόμενο, ένα ζευγάρι πέτρινων «μετεωριτών» περικλείει ακόμα μέσα του ενέργεια. Στο αίθριο, μία «δίνη» από πέτρες ισορροπεί με προσεκτική γεωμετρία χάρη σε τεντωμένα συρματόσχοινα, αποκαλύπτοντας όλη την ένταση της άνωσής της.

Η μαγεία του ουρανού βρίσκεται τόσο στις εικόνες που μας έχει αποκαλύψει όσο και στις ανεξερεύνητες πτυχές του. Και παρότι η ανθρωπότητα έχει κατορθώσει να δώσει επιστημονικές απαντήσεις σε πολλά ερωτήματα που αφορούν στο Σύμπαν, ίσως είναι το μυστήριο και οι αδιόρατες δυνάμεις του που μας κεντρίζουν περισσότερο. Κάποτε το διάστημα υπήρξε ουτοπικός προορισμός στις περιγραφές συγγραφέων, για να κατακτηθεί αργότερα από τους αστροναύτες και σήμερα να φιλοξενεί το «εξωτικό» ταξίδι κάποιων οικονομικά ισχυρών. Κι αν κάθε ουτοπία αποτελεί μία εν δυνάμει πραγματικότητα, ο απέραντος ουρανός θα προσφέρει πάντοτε το δρόμο για ένα ταξίδι ανοιχτό στον κόσμο του διαφορετικού μέλλοντός μας. Και γι’ αυτό δε θα πάψει ποτέ να γεννά ονειρικές προσδοκίες όταν σε δύσκολες στιγμές στρέφουμε το βλέμμα μας προς αυτόν.
